Part of what makes TaxJar such a great place to be is the more than 150-and counting- people who make up our story. We are living our core values daily; proud to be a remote team built on trust who are in control of our own destinies.
What’s so cool (no pun intended) is that this looks very different for all of us. For some, that means working from a home office. For others, they head to a local tea and coffee shop, and a few even live in RVs chasing the sun and snow visiting teammates for mini-JarFests along their journeys. No matter where we are, one thing remains constant: we’re doing the right thing for more than 20,000 customers, and our best work, through the miles, together.
As we close out our greatest year yet and celebrate going into our seventh, I reflect back on my own first year at TaxJar; I’d read this very blog myself. In fact, before my mutual assessment, I’d poured over it. I wondered if TaxJar was too good to be true. How could a company really be getting it so right? Then I joined, and I became part of a culture that’s very real; we celebrate who we are as individuals, and as a team. To that end, this post isn’t one that you may used to be seeing here on the Life at TaxJar blog, but I got to thinking: We openly give ourselves permission to take part in life-whatever that looks like for each of us- because that’s really what it’s all about-living. We don’t just tout perks on job pages. We actually encourage each other to use them. For those of you reading this who are thinking companies like us can’t exist, I thought it was worth sharing to show you that we sure do.
Here at TaxJar, we don’t settle and neither should you. I knew my teammates were up to some really cool things this winter, and decided to “take a trip” around TaxJar to ask what that looked like for them these days. From sun to snow, our virtual visits were nothing short of inspiring.
Winter Around TaxJar
Na, one of our AutoFile specialists took her annual winter trip to Waikiki and shared photos with the team accompanied by a shout-out to Zestful, our peer-to-peer appreciation program which enabled her to book lodging during her trip.
Each year, Account Manager, Angie and her husband purchase ornaments for one another, putting their tree up the weekend after Thanksgiving, revisiting the moments in time they shared from ornaments of years passed. In 2019, they were able to add to their collection during trips to Ireland, Montana and New York City. Angie credits TaxJar’s work/life integration for her ability to travel. Of course this post wouldn’t be complete without a #PetsofTaxJar appearance from her Lily Bug keeping warm on a cold winter’s day.
Software Engineer, Mir, who has a Christmas Eve birthday, loves being in the quiet woods and they celebrate with a solo woods-walk in the Catskills of New York.
Lorena, our Technical Recruiter is sending out Aloha to those of us in need of a dose of sunshine. Her second season as a full-time resident of Maui, she is continuing her newfound tradition of volunteering with a local canoe club’s high-school paddlers.
Meanwhile, Nick on our AutoFile team and his family are enjoying views like these from his home in Idaho:
Our Marketing Coordinator, Sarah, is taking full advantage of the southern weather in Atlanta, Ga., spending a lot of time outdoors with great walks around the Chattahoochee River.
Jess, our Graphic Designer, lives in an Airstream full-time with her husband and their pup, Cooper. They’ll be spending this winter in the Southwest, mountain biking through the desert landscape.
As for me, Program Manager of Employee Experience, I am hanging out in the ever-changing weather of the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas in both 60°F weather and snow in two days’ time. Reminiscing over our traditional winter bonfires, I’m eagerly awaiting the next one.
With so many different scenes, one thing’s for sure; at TaxJar we’re grateful to work from anywhere we want, doing winter our own way. We’re living proof that we’re a team built on trust, and that we trust our teammates to do their best work – no matter where they are. We believe this way we’re able to avoid the many distractions that take us away from the core of our work; creating a world-class product while providing world-class service to our customers, without fighting inclement weather to do it.
